How to Edit Rock Climbing Videos: A Complete Guide
A climbing session films for hours but the send is 40 seconds. How to cut belay footage, long approaches, and repeated attempts into a climbing video worth watching.
Climbing is one of the hardest sports to film well and one of the easiest to film badly. A single session at the crag or in the gym can generate two or three hours of footage: the approach, the flaking of the rope, the belaying, the chalking, the resting, the falling, and somewhere in there, the forty seconds that actually matter.
Then you get home and try to make a video out of it. You have twelve clips of the same boulder problem from the same angle, an hour of belay-cam footage pointed at the sky, and one clean send buried at the end of it all. Turning that into something a non-climber will watch is a real challenge.
The good news is that climbing has a built-in narrative: the struggle and the send. Here is how to find it in the footage and cut everything else.
1. Triage Before You Touch the Timeline
The single biggest mistake in climbing edits is trying to keep too much. Climbers are attached to their footage because they remember how hard the moves felt. The viewer does not have that context and will not sit through the setup.
Do a fast first pass and delete: the approach hike (unless the location itself is stunning), all belaying footage where the camera is static and nothing is happening, chalking and resting between burns, and any attempt where the climber falls off low with no real tension.
For a session that produced two hours of footage, you should be down to eight or ten minutes of actual movement after this pass. That is still too much, but it is a start.
2. Find the Story: Struggle Then Send
Most compelling climbing edits are built on the same arc. Someone tries a hard thing, fails or nearly fails, and then does it. You do not need to invent this. You need to find it in your clips and put it in order.
Pick your hero climb: the hardest send of the session, the best-looking line, or the most dramatic fall. That is the spine of the edit. Then choose one or two supporting attempts that show effort or tension, the near-misses that make the eventual send feel earned.

Consider Linear or a narrower lens mode rather than the widest fisheye. SuperView-style ultra-wide tends to distort the wall and can make steep overhangs read like slabs. Camera position and angle matter most, but a narrower field of view generally preserves the apparent steepness better, which is what makes the climbing look impressive.
For bouldering indoors, watch your exposure. Gyms are lit for climbers, not cameras, and colored holds against bright walls confuse auto-exposure. Lock exposure on the climber's body if your camera allows it, so the person does not go dark every time they move past a bright panel.
4. Mix Your Angles
A whole edit shot from a single helmet cam is disorienting and repetitive. The viewer cannot tell how steep the wall is or how high the climber is off the ground, which removes most of the drama.
The most useful climbing angles: the climber's POV or chest mount (shows the holds and the exposure below), a ground shot from the belayer or a friend (shows the full body position and how the climber moves), a static tripod off to the side or below (reveals the steepness and height), and for outdoor routes, a drone shot that pulls back to show the scale of the wall. Check local drone rules and any site or land-manager restrictions first, and keep well clear of the climber and rope.
Even alternating between two angles transforms an edit. A POV of a hard move cut against a ground shot of the same move from below gives the viewer both the feeling and the context. If you climb with partners, trade filming duties so every send has at least one outside angle.
5. Cut to the Beat
This is what separates a climbing edit that feels intentional from a raw clip dump. When your cuts land on the beat and the hard moves hit on the strong musical moments, the video develops a rhythm that carries non-climbers through footage they would otherwise not understand.
Choose your music track before you arrange clips. Listen for the builds, the drops, and the strong downbeats. Place the crux move or the send on the biggest musical moment. A dyno that lands exactly on a bass hit creates an impact that no amount of color grading can replicate.
The practical workflow is to lay the track down first, mark the major beats, then drag your best clips onto those markers and trim each cut to land on the beat. Doing this by hand means nudging clip edges frame by frame, which is tedious, but it is the highest-impact edit you can make.
6. Handle Rock and Sky Exposure Outdoors
Outdoor climbing footage has a specific exposure problem. The rock is often in shade or backlit while the sky behind it is bright, so cameras either blow out the sky or crush the climber into a silhouette.
In post, lift the shadows to recover detail in the rock and the climber, and pull down the highlights to hold the sky. If you shot in a flat or log profile, you have more room to balance the two without artifacts.
For white balance, rock in open shade reads cool and blue. A slight warm shift makes the stone look like the color you actually remember. Be careful not to over-warm sandstone or granite, which have their own natural tones worth preserving.
7. Use Slow Motion With Restraint
Slow motion is the most powerful tool in a climbing edit and the easiest to overuse. When the whole climb is slowed, the tension disappears and it starts to feel like a screensaver.
Reserve slow motion for two or three peak moments: the dyno, the deadpoint where the climber commits to a far hold, the moment of the send, or a dramatic fall. These deserve the extra time. Everything else stays at real speed to preserve the pace and the effort.
For clean 50% slow motion, shoot at 50 or 60fps against a 24 to 30fps timeline; 120fps gives you room for the most dramatic slow-downs. Slowing 30fps footage far below its capture rate produces a stutter that usually looks worse than real time.
8. Keep It Short
A three-hour session does not become a three-minute video. The best climbing edits run 45 to 90 seconds. That is long enough to set the scene, show the struggle, and land the send, but short enough that every second earns its place.
For social media the demand is even tighter. A 40-second bouldering clip with one clear send and tight cuts tends to hold viewers far better than a sprawling three-minute session recap, and completion is what most platforms reward with reach.
The test for every clip is simple: does this show effort, difficulty, height, or the payoff of the send? If not, cut it. One hard send framed well with good music almost always beats ten clips of warm-up climbing.
